Author Guidelines

Language: IJILAN accepts manuscripts written in English and selected indigenous languages, subject to the availability of competent reviewers and editorial expertise. Authors submitting in indigenous languages are encouraged to provide English abstracts to facilitate wider accessibility.

Scope of the Journal: IJILAN encourages interdisciplinary approaches that connect indigenous language studies with communication, media, education, technology, culture, governance, and sustainable development.

The journal welcomes original contributions in, but not limited to, the following areas:

Manuscript Submission

The International Journal of Indigenous Languages (IJILAN) welcomes the submission of original, high-quality scholarly manuscripts that contribute to the advancement of indigenous language studies and related interdisciplinary fields. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts that are original, ethically conducted, and relevant to the scope and objectives of the journal.

All submissions must comply with the journal’s editorial policies, ethical standards, and formatting requirements.

 

Types of Manuscripts Accepted

IJILAN accepts the following categories of manuscripts:

Originality and Publication Requirement

Submitted manuscripts must:

  • Be original and unpublished;

  • Not be under consideration by another journal or publisher simultaneously;

  • Not contain plagiarized or fabricated content;

  • Comply with ethical research and publication standards.

Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, authenticity, and integrity of their submissions.

Submission Process

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the journal’s official submission platform or editorial email address.

Submissions must include:

  • The complete manuscript;

  • Title page containing author details;

  • Abstract and keywords;

  • Declaration of Interest statement;

  • Ethical approval statement where applicable.

The corresponding author shall serve as the primary contact for all communication relating to the manuscript.

Manuscript Formatting Requirements

Authors should prepare manuscripts using clear academic language and consistent formatting.

General Format

  • Manuscripts should be typed in Microsoft Word format;

  • Font: Times New Roman;

  • Font size: 12-point;

  • Line spacing: Double spacing;

  • Margins: 1 inch on all sides;

  • Page numbering required.

Length

  • Research Articles: 5,000–8,000 words;

  • Review Articles: 4,000–7,000 words;

  • Short Communications: 2,000–3,500 words;

  • Book Reviews: 1,000–2,000 words.

Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

Structure of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should generally contain the following sections:

  1. Title

  2. Author(s) Name and Affiliation

  3. Abstract (150–250 words)

  4. Keywords (4–6 keywords)

  5. Introduction

  6. Literature Review/Theoretical Framework

  7. Methodology

  8. Findings/Analysis

  9. Discussion

  10. Conclusion

  11. References

  12. Appendices (where necessary)

Authors may adapt section headings according to disciplinary conventions.

Abstract and Keywords

Each manuscript must include:

  • A concise abstract summarizing the objectives, methods, findings, and significance of the study;

  • Between four and six keywords relevant to the manuscript.

Where manuscripts are submitted in indigenous languages, an English abstract must also be provided.

Citation and Referencing Style

IJILAN adopts the latest edition of the APA referencing style unless otherwise specified.

Authors must:

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of references;

  • Cite all sources appropriately;

  • Include DOI numbers where available.

Improper referencing or citation practices may result in rejection.

Tables, Figures, and Illustrations

  • Tables and figures must be clearly labeled and numbered;

  • Authors must indicate the appropriate placement of tables and illustrations within the manuscript;

  • Images, maps, and illustrations should be of high quality;

  • Authors are responsible for obtaining copyright permission where required.

Language Policy

The journal accepts manuscripts written in English and selected indigenous languages.

Authors should ensure:

  • Clarity, grammatical accuracy, and academic quality;

  • Consistency in spelling and terminology;

  • Proper translation of non-English terms where necessary.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to request language editing before publication.

Ethical Compliance

Authors must:

  • Adhere to the journal’s ethical policies;

  • Obtain ethical approval where human participants or communities are involved;

  • Respect indigenous cultural protocols and intellectual property rights;

  • Include informed consent statements where necessary.

Submissions involving indigenous communities should demonstrate ethical collaboration and cultural sensitivity.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

The review process includes:

  1. Initial editorial screening;

  2. Plagiarism check;

  3. Peer review by at least two experts;

  4. Editorial decision and author notification.

Possible editorial decisions include:

  • Accept;

  • Minor revisions;

  • Major revisions;

  • Reject.

Authors are expected to revise and resubmit manuscripts within the specified timeframe where revisions are requested.

Plagiarism Screening

All manuscripts are screened using plagiarism-detection software.

Manuscripts containing:

  • Significant plagiarism;

  • Duplicate publication;

  • Fabricated data;

  • Unethical research practices

may be rejected immediately.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their work while granting IJILAN the right of first publication.

Published articles may be distributed under an approved open-access licensing arrangement as determined by the journal.

Acceptance and Publication

Acceptance of manuscripts is based on:

  • Scholarly quality;

  • Originality;

  • Relevance to the journal’s scope;

  • Compliance with ethical and formatting standards.

Accepted manuscripts shall undergo copyediting, proofreading, and final formatting before publication.
